Eurasia Center Interns/Research Assistants 2019-2020
Talin Antarkar is a rising junior at the School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service in International Politics with a concentration in International Law, Institutions, and Ethics and minoring in French. His main academic areas of interest are international law, human rights, and migration. Over the summer of 2020, he primarily served as a research intern for the Eurasia Center, updating and revising various country reports (such as the Switzerland country report, the Afghanistan country report, and the Armenia country report). He also further explored his academic interest in future of human rights in Myanmar.
Betty Berdan is a junior at Georgetown University. She is majoring in Finance and Marketing with a minor in Spanish. With her research for the Eurasia Center, she has gained deeper insights into the cultures, politics, and international relations that drive decision-making around the world. Betty is focusing her work on the Eurasian Business Coalition and International Security in an effort to conduct research to learn more about the financial and security challenges that countries face today and throughout history. She has just completed a brief detailing the history of the Catalan independence movement in Spain from its medieval roots to the impact it is currently making in the 21st century.
My name is Alexander Cutillo and I am a Junior at The George Washington University where I study Political Science and minoring in sustainability. I am interested in the politics of European and Asian countries and the political interactions between the two regions. As an intern, I have been able to better understand the various problems that specific countries must face in order to continue development and grow their economy. In the future, I hope to continue studying economic growth and how to transition to more sustainable sources of energy in developed and developing countries.
Renata Gladkikh is a rising junior at Barnard College majoring in Political Science and Economics, after having previously attended The George Washington University where she gained an interest in interning at the Eurasia Center. She is from both Russia and Kazakhstan which is why she is passionate about learning about the Eurasia region. Renata is attentive to the dynamics between all these regions, including business, trade and international relations, and would like to continue researching these issues. At the Center, she focused on the Central Asian region having worked on a publication and country report on Kazakhstan and has also been running the Instagram page.
Kyra Inston is a rising junior at the George Washington University majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminal Justice. Throughout this summer, Kyra has primarily worked on updating country reports, where she gained a greater knowledge of economic and environmental policies in different Eurasian countries. To further expand upon her interests, she wrote a brief on the current fight for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia for the Eurasia Center.
My name is Valeria Jacome and I am a senior at The George Washington University. My major is International Affairs with a concentration in International Politics and a minor in sociology. I am interested in the politics of European and Middle Eastern countries and the political interactions between the two regions. As an intern, I have been able to better understand the various problems that specific countries face in these regions. At the Eurasia Center, I have written Country Reports on Croatia, Estonia, Lebanon, and Syria and a brief on the Lebanese Revolution. I have also worked with the Eurasian South Asian Program and Environmental & Energy Program conducting research to apply for grants.
Nima Majidi: I am a sophomore at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. I am majoring in Business and Global Affairs with potential minors in Diplomatic Studies and International Development. I am especially interested in researching and writing about sources of international conflict in the Eurasia region and have done lots of research on that topic as it pertains to the Middle East. At the Eurasia Center, I have written Country Reports on Germany, Iran, North Korea, and Yemen and a brief on the 2021 Iranian Presidential Election and its potential implications. I have also worked with the Eurasian Art Foundation to research and apply for grants and have assisted with Eurasia Center communications with thousands of students and professionals.
Caileigh Murray is a Russian Language and Area Studies major at American University. She has a strong interest in Russian geopolitical affairs, as well as history, culture and military affairs. As a Eurasia Center research assistant, Caileigh has been supporting the Europe Program and focusing her research on the Russian Orthodox Church in Russian politics.
Sydney Rowell: I am a Senior at American University where I study International Relations with an emphasis on Inequality and Development in Asia. I am also minoring in Mandarin Chinese, which I have studied intensively in China and Taiwan. I am particularly interested in global security and human rights as it relates to international relations, and hope to continue learning more about diplomacy in the Eastern Asia region. While interning at The Eurasia Center, I completed country reports on Latvia and Kyrgyzstan. I also completed a brief on the new Hong Kong security law.
Thomas Sheffield is a senior at the State University of New York at Fredonia where he majors in Political Science and Music, focusing on democracy and constitutionalism in the United States and around the world. He is interested in exploring democratic processes, the rule of law and the role of institutions across the globe, especially in Europe and East Asia. At the Eurasia Center, he has made contributions to the East Asia Program and American-Eurasian Art Foundation, conducting research on a variety of European countries and India in addition to the status of civil liberties in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anna Somova is a senior student at American University studying International Relations with a minor in History and Business, concentrating in Peace and Conflict Resolution in Eurasia. Originally a Russian citizen from Moscow used to live for five years in Switzerland before coming to the USA. Fluent in Russian, Ukrainian and English. Motivated specialist with substantial experience managing all levels of assigned projects, including government relations and administration. As a Eurasian Intern, she has completed research and written publications on the US-Russia relations and relations between Russia and Ukraine. After graduation, Anna would like to work for an international organization in service of US-Eurasia Relations.
My name is Mitali Thepade and I am a Rising Sophomore at the George Washington University pursuing a degree in Business Administration with concentrations in International Business and Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a minor in Psychology. I am an international student from India interested in understanding the nuances of various problems that countries face economically and through conflict focusing primarily on Middle Eastern, East European and South Asian Countries. Given the rapid changes that occur due to these issues, I wish to gain deeper knowledge about how these aspects affect foreign policy. I also work on the digital marketing platforms of The Eurasia Center.
Kartikeya Uniyal is a rising sophomore at Georgetown University in Qatar. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, majoring in International Politics. He is interested in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Europe and the Middle East. Through his work at the Eurasia Center, he is comprehensively studying the culture and politics of countries within the region. He has specific interests in Chinese diplomacy and is writing a brief on the Belt and Road Initiative. At the Eurasia Center, he is supporting the International Education Program.
Qianyin Wu is a sophomore at Georgetown University majoring in Economics. Her research interests include the role of multinational corporations in mutually beneficial trade relations between the U.S. and Eurasia. In her publication, “US Business Supply Chains in China,” she explores the impact of COVID-19 on the diversification of supply chains from China and the challenges to this transformation. She also worked closely with the Director of the China Program to create a successful presentation on the Chinese economy and the US-China trade war. She hopes her work will help generate a better understanding of how the U.S. and Eurasia can establish trade connections for the betterment of global society.
Pelin “Howard” Xuan: I am a rising Sophomore at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, where I hope to pursue Comparative Studies. I joined the Eurasia Center as an intern to gain more knowledge about current world issues and acquire experience with research. So far in my time with the organization, I have updated country reports, written a brief on the history and current state of the Afghan conflict, and edited the Eurasia Center’s brochure for its China Program.
Yi Zhang is currently enrolling in the double master’s degree program (International Economic Policy/World Politics) held by Sciences Po and Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Yi comes from China and he shares tremendous interests in the affairs of the Eurasian continent and the Americas. He enjoys employing sources from different languages and perspectives to analyze international politics. Through the internship at the Eurasia Center, he has the chance to deepen his understanding of economic relationships between the US and Central Asia. He is working on a brief analyzing the practice of Islam in Tajikistan.
Gamdan Abdullah is a senior at The George Washington University majoring in international business. He is interested in Europe, Russia and the Gulf States and is supporting the Center’s International Education Program and The Eurasian Business Coalition. The areas he is interested in the business world are international business, finance and marketing, with a special interest in investment banking. He will be working on a project for the EBC regarding sovereign international banks.
Naya Fallouh is a freshman at the George Washington University studying international affairs with a concentration on conflict resolution and the Middle East. Through research at the Eurasia Center, she is gaining deeper insight into other countries and cultures, so that she can better understand the perspectives of others. This is crucial to her major since many of things she will be studying wars and international conflicts in depth and will have to take into consideration different ethnic perspectives and how they are involved in international conflict. She is interested in the Gulf States, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Khady Kane is a senior at the George Washington University with a major in International Affairs focusing on International Development and a minor in Political Science. Khady is interested in Europe and Asia (Eurasia). As an intern for The Eurasia Center’s Uplifting Africa Program, she is interested in conducting research for the African continent. Khady is from Senegal and hopes to do research on areas that will help promote the economic growth throughout Africa. She also is interested in researching how international organizations support and uplift Africa in a positive way.
Hadong Li is a sophomore at The George Washington University. He is majoring in International Affairs and Mathematics with concentrations in International Affairs and Economics. He was a member of a China Development Think Tank, a student organization which focused on the international relations between China and the rest of the world. Hadong Li is focusing his efforts on supporting The Eurasian Business Coalition by focusing his efforts on the economies of Europe and East Asia. He has just completed a Eurasia Center/EBC brief analyzing the effect of the coronavirus on the economies of the United States and China.
Joohyun Park is a graduate student at The George Washington University studying International Affairs with a concentration on Security and Development. With special interest in the different dynamics amongst and within countries, she hopes to learn more about the developmental and security challenges countries face, and ways to provide a more sustainable and context-based solution. At the Eurasia Center, Julia is focusing on South and East Asia. She supports the International Security Program and the Environmental Program.
Sahiba Madan is a sophomore at American University and pursuing a BA in International Relations with a minor in Economics, concentrating on International Economics and Europe. She found her interest in international relations from being a child of Indian parents where she had the opportunity to engage with another culture. She speaks English and is currently learning German and Hindi. Sahiba hopes to work in India one day and work on improving their private sector market. Currently Sahiba is supporting the Eurasian Business Coalition/Council.
Tara Rahmani is a graduate student at American University studying International Affairs. As an Iranian native, Tara has been interested in bridging cultural gaps growing up. Her focus is primarily on Central Asian countries and their diplomatic relations with the United States. She speaks Farsi (Persian) fluently and has interests in learning more about different cultural backgrounds. At the Eurasia Center, Tara is focused on Cultural Diplomacy, International Security, Development issues. Tara is also interested in assisting the Uplifting Africa Program researching development and security issues.
Rohit Ram is studying International Relations and Political Science as a dual major studying at American University. Originally an Indian citizen from the UAE, Rohit is now a proud American eager to bridge the gap between East and West through scholarly discourse. Rohit hopes to tie his passion for history into his work to explore how the great political theorists of the past can help the American people gain a nuanced perspective conducive to this dialogue. Rohit is focusing on many regions of Eurasia. His supporting The Eurasia Center’s Civil Society and International Security Programs.
Asim Siddiq is currently in the School of International Service’s Global Scholars Program at American University. Working towards a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a thematic specialization in foreign policy and national security, as well as a regional concentration in South Asia, Asim strives to further understand the various strategic complexities of South Asia. Asim is supporting the International Security Program. He has turned to the Eurasia Center with the hope of developing a more robust understanding of the intricacies of today’s most pressing challenges.
Shriya Tripathi is a junior at the George Washington University. She has a double major in International Affairs (concentrating in Global Public Health) and Public Health. She has a strong interest in disease and humanitarian efforts is also interested in doing research on gender equality and public health efforts in other parts of the world. She is fluent in English, Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu. She is interested in Eurasia and Africa is supporting the Eurasia Center and Uplifting Africa Program’s Charitable and Women’s Programs.
Ran Zhang is an international student from China, studying Public Administration at American University as a graduate student. She is interested in project management and public policy and researching issues on the problems related to East Asia, South Asia, and Russia. Ran Zhang is supporting the Eurasia Center’s International Security and Women’s Programs. She has also completed a Eurasia Brief which is analyzing women’s rights in China. Ran is also interested in the importance of cultural diplomacy in international relations. Ran has also broadened her research efforts to include assisting the Uplifting Africa Program.
Jiancai Zhu is a senior from SUNY Polytechnic Institute in New York State majoring in Business Administration. Previously Jiancai was a fashion designer involved in international trading regarding the fashion industry. She is currently enrolled with the State Universities of New York (SUNY) Washington Internship Program. Her special focus is on Eurasia (European and Asian) regions. At the Eurasia Center, her role is research assistant assisting the senior staff on various research projects which relate to Eurasia such as US-China trade and the effects of the recent coronavirus.
Lexie Anthony is a senior at The George Washington University pursuing her BA in International Affairs with a double concentration in Global Public Health and International Development. While working at the Eurasia Center, she expanded her diplomatic literacy regarding relations between the U.S. and Eurasian countries. In a very timely follow-up to her time abroad, Lexie looks forward to broadening her research on regional development in Eurasia, as well as peace-building mechanisms for conflict-resolution specific to Eurasian countries from a human rights framework perspective.
Daniella Chacon is a sophomore at The George Washington University. She is majoring in International Affairs with a concentration in International Politics & Security Policy. Though she was born in the US, Daniella grew up in Colombia and her interest in politics stemmed from witnessing the democratization and development of Latin American countries. She speaks Spanish fluently and she is currently learning French. Through her internship with the Eurasia Center, she hopes to gain a deep understanding regarding International Affairs and enhancing her knowledge in diplomacy and foreign policy between the US and Eurasian countries.
Annabella Gaspar Del Real is a first generation Mexican-American majoring in International Studies at American University. Having been fortunate enough to travel to Europe as a kid, she met some amazing people and grew interested in European culture, history, and politics. She hopes to learn more about US-Europe diplomatic relations and understand how their politics impact other regions nearby in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Her goals are to learn, research, and connect with as many projects and people as she can to be able to work for an embassy, cultural center, or NGO after she graduates.
Seeran Bari Enayetullah
Seeran Bari Enayetullah is a junior at the George Washington University majoring in Socio-Cultural Anthropology and International Affairs concentrating in Conflict Resolution. He hopes to gain a better understanding regarding the different perspectives in international migration, especially in a world that continues to get more globalized by the day. After graduating Seeran hopes to continue down the path of refugee and migrant rights in the US and abroad.
Ethan Feldman is a Junior at American University's School of International Service. He is from the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. He is primarily interested in international relations theory, the global economy, and foreign policy. Ethan has studied German in both high school and college and speaks it proficiently. He is also interested in German translation. While working at the Eurasia Center he hopes to learn about the conduct of international relations research in a professional setting After college, Ethan hopes to work for an international organization in service of the global economy.
Dylan Halpern is a Junior at American University studying International Relations with a focus in American Foreign Policy. While working with the Eurasia Center, he hopes to learn more about U.S-Russia relations and how their relationship affects regional partnerships across Eurasia. After graduating, Dylan hopes to work in the field of Foreign Policy. Dylan has done work researching issues for the Eurasia Center's International Security Program.
Simon is a junior at George Washington University majoring in International Affairs and minoring in Russian language and literature. He speaks Russian fluently and Spanish on an intermediate level. He is also a part of the Georgetown ROTC Hoya Battalion. At the Eurasia Center, he hopes to understand more about conflict in Eastern Europe, particularly in former Soviet states such as Ukraine. After graduation, Simon will pursue a master's degree in International Affairs.
Linh McCool is attends the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, Washington, DC. She is a B.A. Candidate majoring in International Affairs with a concentration in Security Policy and a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. This semester, she has the pleasure of interning at Suited for Change, a nonprofit organization with the purpose of helping lower income women in the DC area to aid them in their job search journey. While interning at the Eurasia Center, Linh hopes to gain more understanding of the power dynamics in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Lucas Miller is a sophomore at The George Washington University majoring in Middle Eastern Studies. While working with the Eurasia Center, he hopes to learn in a more detailed way how the United States and Middle Eastern countries interact in the diplomatic arena. After graduation, Lucas would like to work in the State Department Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
Tammy Nguyen is a junior at American University studying International Studies and Russian. She was born in Vietnam making Vietnamese her first language. She spent this past summer in Russia participating in an intensive language program to improve her language skills. At American, she works as the marketing & production manager of the university's undergraduate research journal. While working with the Eurasia Center, her goal is to expand her understanding of the IR field, improve her research skills, and make meaningful connections. After graduating, Tammy strives to use her background and skills in a security-related career.
Shivanka Ruhela is a Sophomore at The George Washington University, studying International Affairs and Computer Science. While working at the Eurasia Center, she hopes to learn more about United State relations with other countries, and how it affects the rest of the world.
Ryan Rydza is a senior at SUNY Buffalo State. He is majoring in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Intelligence and Terrorism. While working with the Eurasia Center, he hopes to learn more about the Middle East, specifically how terrorist organizations are affecting the livelihood of the innocent people in the Middle East and the steps that can be taken to eliminate these threats. After graduating, Ryan wants to pursue a career with the FBI as either an agent, or as an intelligence analyst.
Daniel Turner attends the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University studying Middle East Studies and Farsi. He grew up in Turkey for 12 years and speaks the Turkish language fluently. While working with the Eurasia Center, he hopes to learn more about how increased infrastructure, as well as modern diasporas and other recent events, are reshaping the landscape of Eurasia as well as its diplomatic relations. After graduating, Daniel hopes to develop stronger expertise and conduct further research through graduate school studies, and hopes to one day use his expertise by working as a part of the Foreign Service.
Rebecca Wang is a senior at the George Washington University studying international affairs and Economics. She is interested in international law, education, trade and economics. While working with the Eurasia Center, she hopes to learn more about the relationship between countries, and how they work together. After graduating, Rebecca wants to pursue a law degree and focus on international law.
